Tak is a classic-style abstract strategy game in the same family as chess, go, and mancala, created in 2016 by James Ernest and Patrick Rothfuss and inspired by descriptions of the game in Rothfuss's fantasy novel The Wise Man's Fear. It is a two-player game played on a square board using stacking pieces. Boards can vary in size, and the 6x6 format is considered standard and is one of the most commonly played sizes. The primary goal is to build a road from any edge of the board to the opposite edge. Three types of piece are used: flat stones, which can be stacked upon by either player and count as part of a road; and standing stones, which are played upright on their edge, cannot be stacked upon, and do not count towards a road. The capstone is the most powerful piece -- it counts as part of your road, cannot be stacked upon, and has the unique ability to move onto a standing stone and flatten it into a flat stone. If neither player completes a road and the board fills or a player places their last piece, the winner is decided by counting who controls more flat stones.
