The Synology DX517 is a 5-bay expansion enclosure designed to add storage capacity to compatible Synology DiskStation NAS units. It accommodates up to five 3.5" or 2.5" SATA HDDs or SSDs (drives not included) and connects to the host NAS via a single eSATA port. The enclosure is managed entirely through DiskStation Manager on the host NAS, and on-the-fly volume expansion means storage and services are not interrupted while adding capacity. The hot-swappable drive trays allow installation and replacement without powering the system down, and the screwless tray design keeps setup straightforward. The unit powers on and off automatically alongside the connected DiskStation, and its operation is fully integrated with DSM on the host. It can also be used as a dedicated local backup destination, with the option to create it as a separate volume to protect against system failure. The DX517 is backed by Synology's 3-year limited warranty.
