About this deal
The Sinclair ZX81 was a home computer released in 1981 by Sinclair Research. It output video to a television set, saved and loaded programs via an ordinary audio cassette recorder, and used a membrane keyboard. The ZX81's built-in 1K of RAM was not a lot to work with, and while some programs were written to fit in the restricted space, the real solution was more memory. This lot includes the computer alongside its official 16K RAM pack, sold as an untested bundle, making it ideal for collectors or retro computing enthusiasts happy to carry out their own testing and repairs. The RAM pack requires no soldering -- it slides onto the edge connector and is recognised by the system on power-up. However, the 16K RAM expansion is well known for the "RAM pack wobble" problem: being top-heavy and supported only by the edge connector, it could fall out, crashing the ZX81 and losing any program or data in memory. As this item is listed as untested, buyers should factor in the possibility of faults with either the computer or the RAM pack, and are advised to inspect the edge connectors carefully before use.
