One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. Volume 1 is subtitled Romance Dawn - The Dawn of the Adventure. As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by the buccaneer Red-Haired Shanks, but his life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit, gaining the power to stretch like rubber at the cost of never being able to swim again. Years later, still vowing to become king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure in search of the legendary One Piece, said to be the greatest treasure in the world. The series is published in the shonen manga anthology Weekly Shonen Jump and has been collected into tankоbon format volumes since December 1997. This opening volume covers Luffy's early alliance with a boy named Coby, his rescue of and friendship with swordsman Zoro, and an introduction to Nami, two future core members of the Straw Hat crew. It is an ideal starting point for newcomers to the series and for fans of action-adventure shonen manga such as Naruto or Dragon Ball.
