Kinnikuman (meaning "Muscle Man") is a Japanese manga series created by the duo Yudetamago. It follows Suguru Kinniku, a superhero who must win a wrestling tournament to retain the title of prince of Planet Kinniku. The manga was originally published in Shueisha's shonen manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump from 1979 to 1987 , and restarted publication in 2011, spawning spin-off manga and anime series, video games, anime films, and a wide range of merchandise. Three core themes run through the series: comedy, fighting, and friendship. Fighting is the main draw, with the manga loading readers up with non-stop action across tournament-based story arcs. The series won the 30th Shogakukan Manga Award in the Best Children's Manga category in 1984 , and it has had a strong influence on many modern manga, including Dragon Ball Z and One Piece.
