About this deal
The Arcam Alpha II (also written Alpha 2) is a classic British stereo integrated amplifier, built in 1989 by Arcam in Waterbeach, Cambridge. It delivers 30 watts continuous output per channel into 8 ohms, and its high peak current output stage can drive loudspeakers whose impedance dips as low as 2 ohms. The high transient current capability is made possible by 100-watt power transistors combined with high-value low-ESR reservoir capacitors and a generously rated toroidal mains transformer. It is a solid choice for anyone building a classic hi-fi separates system. Inputs cover phono turntable (disc), tuner, CD, video (aux) and tape, with outputs for a single pair of loudspeakers and a headphone socket. Bass and treble tone controls and a tape monitor switch are also included. The phono stage is optimised for moving magnet and high-output moving coil cartridges, and an optional plug-in MCA board can accommodate low-output moving coil cartridges. This is a used example, so some cosmetic wear is to be expected.
