The VL6180X is a three-in-one optical module combining an infrared laser emitter, a proximity sensor, and an ambient light sensor (ALS). It uses time-of-flight measurements of infrared pulses for ranging, giving accurate results independent of the target's colour and surface. The module is recommended for distances from 5 mm to 100 mm, making it well suited to short-range applications such as robotics, proximity detection, and basic gesture recognition. Distance and ambient light level readings are returned via a digital I2C interface, and the breakout board includes a voltage regulator and level shifters so it can be connected to both 5 V and 3.3 V microcontrollers such as Arduino Uno, ESP32, and ESP8266.
