The Thames and Kosmos Hero Sound-Sensing Robot is a hands-on STEM experiment kit aimed at children aged 8 and over. Kids build the robot from over 100 parts, guided by a full-colour, 52-page manual that includes step-by-step assembly instructions and an adventure comic. The finished robot perceives and reacts to sounds through three directional microphones. Its innovative design features movable arms that can disappear into its spherical body and a giant, illuminated eye for making facial expressions. Four unique play modes offer engaging lessons in sound waves and spatial hearing: activate Hero to follow you around, respond in certain ways to specific series of sounds, dance to your favourite music, or challenge you to a game of tug-of-war. Removable stickers let you give your robot a unique personality, while the included castanet allows kids to experiment with different patterns of sounds. The kit is screen-free and was a 2025 Tech Toy of the Year finalist.
