About this deal

Marvel gave McFarlane a new, adjectiveless Spider-Man title for him to both write and draw, launching in August 1990. Spider-Man #1 sold 2.5 million copies, largely due to the variant covers with which Marvel published the issue to encourage collectors into buying more than one edition. Issue #1 opens the "Torment" story arc, written and illustrated entirely by McFarlane, in which the Lizard goes on a murderous rampage, poisons Spider-Man, and throws him off a building, before it is revealed that the villain Calypso is hypnotising the Lizard to do her bidding. McFarlane wrote and illustrated 15 of the series' first 16 issues, many of which featured popular Marvel guest stars such as Wolverine and Ghost Rider. This lot is a solid introduction to his celebrated run and will appeal to fans of 1990s Marvel, collectors of key Bronze and Modern Age issues, and anyone interested in the work of a creator who went on to co-found Image Comics. Spider-Man #1 was one of the first Marvel issues to feature numerous variant covers, and the series became the fourth monthly title for the wall-crawler.
