About this deal
The Mega Drive is electronically backwards compatible with its predecessor the Sega Master System, but the cartridge ports are physically very different, making it impossible to play Master System games on the Mega Drive without an adapter. The Master System Converter plugs into the Mega Drive and allows users to insert Master System cartridges into a port under the top cover, as well as run Master System card-based titles through the forward-facing slot. The converter also replicates the Master System's Pause button, which is not natively part of the Mega Drive. Sega made this backwards compatibility a selling point of the console, particularly in PAL regions where the Master System enjoyed significant popularity. It is an ideal accessory for anyone with an existing Master System game collection who has upgraded to a Mega Drive. Note that the standard Master System Converter was designed for the original Mega Drive shell and is not compatible with the Mega Drive II -- Sega released a separate Master System Converter II in 1993 specifically to accompany the Mega Drive II. Your existing Mega Drive controller can be used to play the 8-bit games, using the B and C buttons.
