About this deal
The Sega Mega Drive is a 16-bit fourth generation home video game console developed and sold by Sega, and was the company's third home console. It arrived in Europe in 1990, distributed by Virgin Mastertronic. The console is built around a Motorola 68000 CPU running at 7.6 MHz, with a secondary Zilog Z80 CPU handling sound and providing backwards compatibility with the Master System via an adapter. It plays a library of more than 800 games on ROM-based cartridges. The Mega Drive performed well in most markets, largely thanks to its arcade ports, sports games and platformers. The original model features a Yamaha YM2612 FM synthesiser delivering clean stereo audio through a headphone jack, a distinctive selling point that gave the console its punchy, characterful sound. Buying used is a popular and cost-effective way for retro gaming fans to get into the hardware, and the Mega Drive sold over 30 million units worldwide, meaning spare parts and games remain widely available.
