About this deal
Rise of the Robots is a 1994 fighting game released by Time Warner Interactive, originally developed for the Amiga and PC before being ported to the Mega Drive, Super NES, and other consoles. The Mega Drive version was developed and programmed by Data Design Interactive. The game includes a single-player mode in which the player takes on the role of the ECO35-2 Cyborg, attempting to stop the Supervisor who has seized control of a futuristic corporate facility, plus a two-player versus mode. The gameplay is broadly similar to other fighting games of the era such as Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat, but uses pre-rendered 3D sprites and a cast made up entirely of robots, with a plot drawing on cyberpunk films like Blade Runner and RoboCop. The game also features music connected to Queen guitarist Brian May, with tracks taken from his solo work. Rise of the Robots generated considerable pre-release buzz for its advanced visuals, but on release became notorious for significant gameplay shortcomings -- making it a notable and well-recognised piece of 16-bit gaming history. This is the PAL boxed Mega Drive version, suited to retro collectors and fans of early 1990s fighting games.
