Super Mario Land is one of the original Mario titles released for the Game Boy, bringing the iconic plumber to handhelds for the first time. The DMG-ML-UKV is the official UK PAL release, which launched in the UK on 28 September 1990. Modelled after the original Super Mario Bros., the game adapts side-scrolling gameplay for the Game Boy's smaller screen, with the player guiding Mario through 12 levels to rescue Princess Daisy -- in her debut appearance -- from the alien Tatanga in the setting of Sarasaland. Super Mario Land is unique for introducing vehicles for Mario to ride: the Sky Pop aeroplane and the Marine Pop submarine. The traditional Fire Flower power-up is also replaced by the Super Flower, which transforms Mario into Superball Mario. Instead of regular fireballs, the superball bounces at a diagonal angle, ricocheting off walls, blocks, and even ceilings. Super Mario Land went on to sell over 25 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the fourth best-selling titles on the system.
