Gin Tama is a manga series by Hideaki Sorachi that became a major hit after launching in Japan's Weekly Shonen Jump in 2004. Set in an alternate Edo-era Japan invaded by aliens who outlawed the samurai way of life, it follows hotheaded former samurai Gintoki "Gin" Sakata, who takes any odd job that comes his way to make ends meet. Along the way Gin is joined by Shinpachi Shimura, the teenage son of a samurai, and Kagura, an alien girl living on Earth who has nowhere else to go. The series blends madcap action and comedy rather than dwelling on melancholy, and characters frequently break the fourth wall for comic effect. This first volume also includes Sorachi's manga debut, the one-shot story "Dandelion". Published by VIZ Media, the paperback runs to 216 pages and reads right to left in the traditional Japanese style.
