Written by Donald Lemke, a children's book editor and author who has produced more than 100 books for young readers, featuring popular characters such as Batman, Superman and Scooby-Doo, it is illustrated by Sean Dietrich. Published by Stone Arch Books in 2008, it is aimed at children aged 4 to 8. The story follows Hansel and Gretel as they are left in the forest by their parents and must find their way home, only to discover a house made of sugary sweets owned by an evil, and hungry, old witch. The book also includes an informative author's note from Lemke discussing the origins of the tale, including how the 1812 Grimm Brothers version featured an evil mother rather than a stepmother. It is a great introduction to graphic novels for young readers who enjoy fairy tales and adventure stories.
