Bleach is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tite Kubo, following teenager Ichigo Kurosaki, who obtains the powers of a Soul Reaper from Rukia Kuchiki and uses them to defend humans from evil spirits called Hollows, while guiding departed souls to the afterlife. The narrative weaves themes of friendship, duty, and the battle between good and evil. It targets a demographic of young males aged twelve to eighteen. The series was serialised in Shueisha's shonen manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump from August 2001 to August 2016, with its chapters collected into 74 volumes in total. It was awarded the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen category in 2005. Bleach had over 120 million copies in circulation as of 2018.
