Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yana Toboso, serialised in Square Enix's shonen manga magazine Monthly GFantasy since September 2006. The story follows Ciel Phantomhive, the 12-year-old Earl of Phantomhive and the Queen's Watchdog, tasked with solving crimes in the underworld of Victorian-era London. He has formed a contract with the demon Sebastian Michaelis, who poses as his butler, in exchange for revenge on those who tortured him and murdered his parents -- with Sebastian ultimately permitted to consume Ciel's soul. The opening chapters blend comedy-filled slice-of-life storytelling centred on the young Earl and his household staff before the tone gradually darkens, while still retaining a goofy sense of humour throughout. This first volume is a great starting point for fans of dark fantasy, Victorian gothic settings, and the supernatural, and the series went on to spawn a popular anime adaptation and a long-running manga run of over 30 volumes. The copy listed is in like new condition.
