About this deal

The Amstrad PC1640SD is a vintage IBM-compatible personal computer launched in 1987. The SD designation stands for Single Drive, meaning the machine came fitted with one 5.25-inch floppy disc drive rather than two. It was a very successful entry-level PC bought by many small and medium-sized businesses, built around an 8 MHz Intel 8086 processor. It improved on its predecessor, the PC1512, with 640 KB of RAM and the EGA graphics standard. One standout feature was its integrated graphics solution, based on a Paradise chipset, which allowed the machine to support CGA, Hercules (MDA), and EGA-compatible modes without requiring additional expansion cards. The power supply was housed inside the monitor rather than the main unit. The machine was sufficiently powerful to run office software popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including WordPerfect 5.1. This is a used complete bundle and represents a rare opportunity to own a piece of British computing history as it would originally have appeared on a desk.
