Akira is a Japanese cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic manga series written and illustrated by Katsuhiro Otomo. Set in Neo-Tokyo, a city recovering from thermonuclear attack, the streets have been ceded to motorcycle gangs while the rich and powerful run dangerous experiments on destructive, supernatural powers they cannot control. The 120 chapters and more than 2,000 pages were collected into six volumes by Kodansha. This eBay lot is an ideal way to pick up multiple issues or volumes in one purchase. Akira was especially important in introducing American and European audiences to Japanese comics, opening a great cross-fertilisation of art between Western and Japanese comics and causing manga to flood into Western markets. The English-language edition was published by Epic Comics, an imprint of Marvel Comics, running to 38 issues; the colouring was by Steve Oliff, hand-picked by Otomo, and Akira became the first ongoing comic book to feature computer colouring. These issues are now considered collectible and have been long out of print, making a job lot a great find for fans and collectors alike.
