A 3.5-inch floppy drive cleaning disk looks just like a standard floppy disk but contains an absorbent pad in place of the magnetic media. It cleans the drive's read/write heads and can be used dry or wet by adding a couple of drops of isopropyl alcohol to the inner disc material. It is compatible with any 3.5-inch floppy disk drive, including Amiga computers, Atari ST, retro PCs, Acorn and Apple machines. Cleaning the heads occasionally is essential, especially given how many dusty disks are in circulation and the fact that most of these drives are now over 20 years old. Crud on a floppy drive read head can scrape up oxide and ruin not only the problem diskette but subsequent ones too, a common consequence of old media becoming brittle as its iron oxide coating strips away. Cleaning the heads is often the first thing to try when experiencing read or write errors, and in most cases it will save you from having to buy a replacement drive.
